How to Take a Proactive Approach to Termite Control

All too often, when we get a call from a homeowner, it’s because they’re in a desperate situation. They’ve noticed a termite problem because they see they’ve found droppings on their windowsills or weird tube structures creeping up the sides of their home. At this point, the damage has already been done. While there is hope for recovery, a termite infestation is a serious problem that involves money and time to fix. Rather than waiting until the very last moment to step in and intervene on behalf of your home, we strongly recommend that our clients invest in a proactive approach to termite control.

What does it mean to be proactive about termites? Certainly, there are professional treatments that can help keep termites from damaging your home, but there are also a lot of things that you can do as a homeowner to prevent termite colonies from invading your home.

Remove Temptation

Termites love to eat wood. So that pile of firewood stacked up against your house or the rotten tree stump in the backyard is practically an invitation for infestation. Clear your property of things that could draw termites to you.

Reduce Entry Points

We want to avoid doing anything that will make it easier for a termite to access your home. For example, subterranean termites enter structures from underground, so we want to make sure that wood does not touch the ground at any point. Termites can also travel into your home from bushes planted too close or trees with low-hanging limbs. A simple way to protect your home is to cut back foliage as much as possible.

Eliminate Unwanted Moisture

Termites love moisture. Any place where water collects around your foundation can be a breeding ground. Check for leaks regularly, ensure sprinklers and downspouts point away from your home, and keep tabs on your roof. Areas of water intrusion will attract bugs.

Get Preventative Treatment

In many cases, you can avoid a termite infestation with a little preventative maintenance. It’s much cheaper (and much less stressful) to invest in regular pest control than the cost to repair termite damage to your home and fumigate for an existing infestation. Treating your home on a regular basis is the single most important thing you can do to avoid incurring damage from termites and other pests too. Our techs will spot signs of a termite issue, make recommendations, and provide termite treatment that can efficiently mitigate the threat right away.
