What kind of habitats does a powderpost beetle prefer?

Powderpost beetles love raw hardwoods and are unlikely to inhabit soft woods. Like many pests, powderpost beetles prefer the warm, damp environments they find in Florida. They are frequently found living in stored lumber or furniture or in the beams and rafters that make up your home. Their love of humidity makes the crawl space beneath your home an ideal environment for them to nest and reproduce. They are attracted to light and can be found near doors and windows.

What damage does a powderpost beetle cause?

While powderpost beetles are not directly harmful to humans in the form of bites or stings, they do cause damage to wooden structures. They get their name from the way they eat through hard wood and turn it into a powdery dust over time. The larvae of powderpost beetles cause the most damage to a wooden object as they move through piece of wood looking for starches to eat all the while carving tunnels behind them. The damage caused by these pests isn’t as severe as termite damage but can affect resale value.

These pests are commonly found throughout Florida.
